WHO Air Quality Guidelines

For certain families of chemicals (dioxins, PCBs, hydrocarbons), first find the CAS registry No. or specific HTTVs in “Useful References”

 Toxicology data bases consulted

The first stage consists of identifying the chemical substance by using the “international passport”, i.e. the CAS registry number.
Five “identification” data bases have been selected; they were chosen because of the number of substances recorded and for the synonym and translation options:

  • Reptox (Commission de la Santé et de la Sécurité du Travail - Occupational Health & Safety Board, Quebec, Canada)

  • Chemindex (Commission de la Santé et de la Sécurité du Travail – Occupational Health & Safety Board, Quebec, Canada)

  • NIOSH (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, USA)

  • NIOSH & Institut Scientifique de la Santé Publique - Scientific Institute of Public Health, Belgium)

  • ChemIndustry.com (USA)

Furêtox has data on more than 200 000 names of compounds.

A further twelve data bases referencing “chronic HHTVs” were selected because they are run by recognised English-speaking and/or French-speaking scientific organisations and offer free Internet access.

The list does not claim to be exhaustive, but has information which can provide answers, or partial answers, to environmental health questions that professionals often have to deal with.
Data bases providing guidance values for environmental compartments only were not selected. The RAIS database compiling HHTVs established by other bodies was initially selected but could not be included in Furetox because of its structural design.

Four databases, chosen according to the same selection criteria, have carcinogenicity classifications.

  • US Environmental Protection Agency

  • Health Canada
  • European Union (ECB: European Chemical Bureau)
